EXCLUSIVE : THOMAS LEER / ROBERT RENTAL SEVEN-INCH
This month’s exclusive Electronic Sound seven-inch contains an unreleased track from ROBERT RENTAL’s recently unearthed batch of home recordings, plus a track taken from his friend and DIY recording exponent THOMAS LEER’s most recent album ‘Reaching Never Quite’. Coinciding with the launch of an exhibition of the pair’s work, this very special limited edition record is part of Electronic Sound’s celebration of the DIY electronica boom of the late 1970s and 1980s.
Thomas Leer’s 1978 single ‘Private Plane’ was part of the DIY Revolution, when home-studio recorded electronica started to infiltrate the indie charts. Leer, who went on to form Act with Propaganda’s Claudia Brücken in the late 1980s, is interviewed in this month’s Electronic Sound, and talks about his friendship with Robert Rental, who passed away in 2000. Rental’s 1978 single ‘Paralysis’ was another important release of 1978, and he went on to work with Daniel Miller on the extraordinary album ‘Thomas Leer And The Normal Live At West Runton Pavillion’, released in 1980. He died in 2000, and only now is some of the unreleased material he recorded during his life seeing the light of day.
