We have something a bit different to accompany this month’s Electronic Sound – a snazzy pink vinyl seven-inch featuring two superb tracks by JARV IS…, the electronic flavoured new project from Jarvis Cocker. Yes, we do mean that Jarvis Cocker.
‘Jimmy’ and ‘Joyce’ are sublime analogue sound paintings, seething with sizzle and twang and crackle and drone. Recorded with his long-time collaborator Jason Buckle, they are probably Cocker’s purest electronic works to date. The pieces were originally commissioned by the iconic Scottish choreographer Michael Clark for his 2012 production ‘Who’s Zoo?’, but they have remained unreleased until now.
“They have a very raw sound,” notes Cocker. “I was playing a Juno-60 and Jason had this strange drum machine. We recorded the whole thing live. The first time we played it, it broke the PA of the venue that we were in, because you can get such crazy sounds out of those keyboards. You have to be careful really. They can be quite painful.”
As with all of our seven-inch releases, this record is strictly limited and exclusive to readers of Electronic Sound, so make sure you grab your copy while you can.
