Aphex Twin – ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’ (Apollo black vinyl double LP)
Aphex Twin released this landmark album in 1993 on Apollo, the R&S Records Apollo offshoot label. Ostensibly a collection of Richard D James’ bedroom work recorded onto cassette, some of it dating back to his early teens, it tilted the axis of ambient music for the 1990s. The electronic melodies and beats of ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92′ are constantly surprising, but exist in a beautifully soft and almost sleepy fog. Unlike some of James’ more strident work, there’s nothing terrifying here, just a constant unfolding of delightful textures and tones. Alongside The Orb’s ‘Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld’, it set the tone for electronic music’s conquering of the decade’s semi-consciousness.
