WE ASKED ELECTRONIC SOUND READERS WHO ARE GOING TO SEE KRAFTWERK ON THEIR UK & IRELAND TOUR TO TELL US WHAT THEY THOUGHT. PAUL WILKINSON WENT TO SEE THEM IN MANCHESTER…
Ever since The Times newspaper (I think) graded the Manchester Bridgewater Hall in its top 10 concert venues, I have always wanted to see Kraftwerk perform there, and it certainly did not disappoint. I have done the whole tour, and this concert was the third best, with Belfast and Birmingham having been my favourites so far.
As you entered the venue there was a great buzz and feeling in the air for this Kraftwerk concert tonight. Famous musicians turned up to witness the Kraftwerk spectacle, including Johnny Marr .
As the band walked onto the stage to ‘Numbers’ there was a huge cheer from the audience. The sound was loud but each area of sound was not overpowering – the mix was just right. The audience were really enjoying and were clapping away during ‘Tour De France’ and cheering with delight when the robots appeared. The highlight of the concert though was, for the first time on this tour, the band performing ‘Vitamin’. This is a great track and in recent years has just been used in the catalogue ‘Tour De France Soundtracks’ concerts. This was a great, unexpected surprise and it sounded amazing. The band didn’t replace ‘Vitamin’ with another track, they just added it, making the concert about 2 hours 10/15 minutes long. The tour though has had various technical problems but this concert didn’t suffer and it was just how a Kraftwerk concert should be.
As the band walked off stage and said goodnight, each member got a huge round of applause. Ralf received a standing ovation as he has every night on this tour. This was a really enjoyable concert and certainly lived up to expectations. As the tour approaches its end it’s next stop is London and the Royal Albert Hall…
See you there.
